On September 1, 2025, IIC Academy officially launched its IBSC-recognised S-5B Hydrographic Surveyor Program, marking a significant milestone in advancing global hydrographic education. The launch was celebrated with virtual opening ceremonies across Oceania, Europe, and North America, bringing together students, instructors, and industry partners.
The 2025 intake drew students from New Zealand, Australia, Kiribati, Singapore, Sweden, Spain, and the USA, reflecting the truly international demand for skilled hydrographic professionals. These students represent a diverse range of maritime backgrounds and will now embark on a structured learning journey combining online theory with intensive onsite field training.
The S-5B program is formally recognised by the FIG/IHO/ICA International Board on Standards of Competence (IBSC) as a Category B program. It covers the full hydrographic survey workflow, from planning and data acquisition through to processing, quality control, and final product delivery. Students complete 15 weeks of online theory via Blackboard Learn, followed by 3 weeks of practical training and a 4-week Comprehensive Final Field Project.
This launch represents IIC Academy's continued commitment to building the next generation of hydrographic surveyors and addressing the global skills shortage in the industry.
