IIC Academy Launches IBSC-Recognised S-8B Marine Geospatial Information

In mid-September 2025, IIC Academy officially launched its IBSC-recognised S-8B Marine Geospatial Information Program, marking another important milestone in advancing international marine geospatial education. The launch was celebrated with a virtual opening ceremony, bringing together students, instructors, and global partners.

The 2025 intake drew students from the Philippines, Australia, Hong Kong, and beyond, reflecting the growing global demand for expertise in marine geospatial information. These students bring diverse professional and cultural backgrounds and will now embark on a rigorous learning journey designed to prepare them for careers in nautical cartography and chart production.

The S-8B program focuses on the production, management, and quality assurance of marine geospatial data used in nautical charting and maritime navigation. Recognised by the FIG/IHO/ICA International Board on Standards of Competence (IBSC) as a Category B program, it combines instructor-led online theory from September through April with a Comprehensive Cartographic Project (CCP) running from May to August.

Students gain practical competencies aligned with IHO S-8, S-57, S-4, and foundational S-100 standards, preparing them for operational roles in hydrographic offices and marine geospatial organisations worldwide.
