S-5B Oceania Update: Students Complete the Comprehensive Final Field Project

IIC Academy's S-5B Hydrographic Surveyor Program students from Oceania are deep into their Comprehensive Final Field Project (CFFP) — the final assessment of the program.

The CFFP requires students to draw on the full suite of theoretical and practical knowledge gained throughout the program, demonstrating their ability to apply it across the complete range of IBSC-required competencies for hydrographic surveying.

In the CFFP, students are provided with a Hydrographic Instruction (HI) covering the full range of data-gathering requirements anticipated within a hydrographic survey. From this, students must conduct a reconnaissance, establish horizontal and vertical control, and gather all required data on land and water — across a variety of challenging seabed and environmental conditions — using a full range of hydrographic and survey equipment. They then process the data and generate all required reporting and visualisations.

As the name implies, the CFFP is comprehensive in its coverage, systems, and demands on students. It requires application of the full range of theoretical and field knowledge and serves as their final assessment.
